Dr. Joseph Fernandes passed
away at the young age of 50
passing on the ownership of his
share of the clinic to his wife
Mrs. Lena Fernandes.
The clinic continued to run under
Dr. Harry Fernandes and was
managed by Mrs. Lena Fernandes.
Dr. Frank Fernandes
(S/o Dr. Joseph and Lena
Fernandes) graduated with the LDSc degree from the prestigious Nair Institute in Bombay. He was 1 of
the 16 candidates who
qualified for this degree in the 8 exams conducted
from 1941 to 1954.
In 1948, The Dental
Council of India was
established.
Mrs.Lena hands over ownership of
her share of the clinic to Dr. Frank.
Dr. Frank passed away
aged 84. He was still
working part time in the
practice until a few months
before his passing.
His committed service in the field
of dentistry was for an impressive
62 years.
Dr. Jonua graduated from Saveetha Dental College, Chennai with a
masters in Oral Implantology.

Dr. Joseph Fernandes did his dental training in his early 20s by working as an apprentice under a British General surgeon. Back then there were no dental colleges with formal dental training in India. He started working in his hometown Mangalore but soon set his eyes on Chennai to start up his own practice. In 1924 he moved to Chennai and opened up a dental clinic at No.10 Broadway, George Town. Being one of the very few people who practiced dentistry in Chennai at that time he was very well known and respected in the city. Sadly, he passed away at the young age of 48. Through his life he mentored and trained a number of his peers one of whom was his brother Dr. Harry Fernandes who later joined him and the partnership of ‘Fernandes & Fernandes Dental Surgeons’ was created.

Dr. Harold Fernandes was the younger brother of Dr. Joseph Fernandes. Following in his brothers footsteps he began his dental training by working as an apprentice at Fr. Mullers Hospital, Mangalore. He joined his brother as a partner in the clinic in the year 1927. Through his years of practice he worked with his brother making the name Fernandes & Fernandes Dental Surgeons the most reputed and well known dental clinic in Chennai. In the latter stage of his life he was joined by his nephew
Dr. Frank Fernandes. Dr. Harold Fernandes worked for many years until his passing in the year 1965.
2nd Generation
Dr. Frank Fernandes did his dental training at Nair Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai. He graduated with the degree of ‘Licentiate in Dental Science’ in the year 1947. He was 1 of 16 candidates who qualified for this degree in the eight examinations conducted from December 1941 to December 1954. In the year 1948, soon after he graduated, the Dental Council of India was started He registered his degree with the dental council in the year 1950 becoming the 8th registered dentist (Reg. No: 8). Through his years of practice he earned enormous love and respect from his patients for his workmanship and his quick wit and humor. Even to this day some of our older patients recall the time when they were treated by
Dr. Frank Fernandes. He served at our clinic for 62 years until his passing in 2009.
